Withings — a French consumer electronics company (known for its hybrid smartwatches and fitness trackers) that once part of Nokia — has today announced a new smartwatch at the CES 2020. The new smartwatch, called Withings ScanWatch, follows the same minimalist design language as its predecessors and focuses more on health and fitness tracking capabilities.
In terms of design, the Withings ScanWatch features an analog dial with two hands for hours and minutes, respectively. It includes a subdial that displays your progress towards daily activity goals in percentage. Essentially, the smartwatch has a PMOLED display, which shows a wide range of information like ECG, SpO2, notifications, heart rate, steps, distance, calories, activities, and more. It comes in two screen sizes: 38mm and 42mm, with the 38mm model featuring a 1.6-inch screen and the 42mm model having an ever so slightly bigger 1.65-inch display.
The smartwatch comes with three electrodes: two on the back and one on the front, that aid with recording electrocardiogram to detect atrial fibrillation, and low and high heart rate. There is a dedicated app, called the Health Mate app, available on both Android and iOS, to allow you to perform customizations, check daily goals, and perform a few other operations. The company says the smartwatch comes with up to 50m (5ATM) of water resistance and offers a 30-day battery life, with the ability to charge to up to 80% in 1 hour and up to 100% in 2 hours.
Talking about health and fitness activities, the hybrid smartwatch comes with connected GPS to allow for multi-sport tracking, an altimeter to count floors, and offers features such as sleep tracking (light, deep, rem), 24×7 heart-rate tracking, running, biking or walking session with support for over 30 activities, oxygen saturation levels, and more.
Besides these, what’s interesting with the new smartwatch from Withings is that, unlike most other hybrid smartwatches in the market, the ScanWatch has been built using inputs from cardiologists, and soon it be clinically validated, making it the world’s first hybrid smartwatch that possesses the ability to alert a user to a possible cause of atrial fibrillation or sleep apnea.
