A tiny-home community is rising in Houston’s East End Revitalized.
Leading the design front is local architect Brett Zamore, whose renderings show a sleek enclave of modern, shotgun-style houses with contemporary, white facades.
If the name sounds familiar it’s probably because Zamore has long been a green builder with a knack for innovation in town. In 2015 he introduced the idea of “tiny home kits” to Houston: environmentally friendly houses neatly packaged into customizable parcels that can be erected on lots using different sets of materials, sizes and layouts to accommodate various budgets.
“We have had over 20 kit homes built in Houston and beyond,” Zamore told the Houston Chronicle in 2015. “Each has been customized by the individual owner in their own way from lighting, plumbing fixtures, trim work, colors, slight changes to the layout, cabinetry, tile, countertops and etcetera.”

The architect, who is Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design-accredited, takes green building seriously. He has been known to use wood reclaimed from Houston tear-down structures.
Zamore’s unique brand of homes takes into consideration the hot Houston climate and how to most efficiently use air conditioning. Shotgun homes are narrow: This design propels air from front to back at a more rapid pace.
They’re also pretty small. At 800 square feet and two bedrooms, at least one property listed for sale is priced at $249,900.
So who’s going to be eyeing these types of dwellings?
“We’ve primarily seen single professionals (looking at these homes),” Sotheby’s International Realty listing agent Jonathan Williamson of Martha Turner told CultureMap. “People are realizing they don’t need so much space or stuff. Minimalism is growing in popularity. People are realizing they’d rather have money for travel and other lifestyle choices than a high mortgage.”
Along with the minimalist architecture and less-is-more approach comes access to some of the city’s great retailers, since these all fit within a small lot in Greater Eastwood.
The Metro Rail, popular coffee shops and boutiques are just steps from your front door.
