Anjali Rawat Architects have designed this home in a contemporary style

Pastel hues, clean design and minimalist decor breathe a Nordic air in this home situated in Worli, Mumbai, transporting one to a rare side of Scandinavia where colours and patterns have equal footing. “The approach was to create an aesthetic that was timeless, functional and versatile. The project is bling-free and homely, with an array of Scandinavian flourishes. Given that the owners—a young couple and their parents—had busy lifestyles, we made sure to maintain maximum natural light and subtle, monochromatic colours. This would keep the house free-flowing, light-filled and easy on the eye,” says Anjali Rawat, founder and chief interior designer of her eponymous design firm, Anjali Rawat Architects.

Ravishing Retrofits

Retrofitting was the name of the design game when it came to furniture. “The clients were clear that they didn’t want craftsmen and carpenters visiting every day. Instead, they were keen on an IKEA-furnished home. The fact that the whole house is an IKEA showcase is a win in form and functionality,” says Rawat.

Entrance

The foyer is reigned by a brooding palette of silver and grey, amplified by a mirror-panelled wall. A circular, wood-rimmed mirror anchors the adjacent wall, while a daisy shoe cabinet underpins the vignette. The concrete-finished wall exudes a raw, rustic appeal, dovetailing nicely with the polished periphery.

Living Room

Pastel colours enliven the living room with blush-pink armchairs, a silver pouffe and a periwinkle-blue IKEA sofa. A sable IKEA coffee-table takes centre-stage, underpinned by a piano key rug. Abstract art prints from Calcutta highlight a concrete-finished wall, while diaphanous curtains effectively contour the straight-lined aesthetic. The wall opposite is clad in ridged wooden panels that are a nod to the tropical pockets of verdure.

Dining Room

The dining area is a fluid extension of the living room. Upholstered grey chairs echo the concrete wall palette of the living room. A rectangular table with rounded edges visually demarcates the dining area from the neighbouring passage. The area is presided over by a lush rainforest theme, courtesy of bijou hand-painted plates highlighting the wall.

Passage

Sleek modular storage units in oak and charcoal line the passageway leading to the bedrooms. Monochromatic zebra- and Dalmatian-printed artworks add a zany edge to the decor.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is an equal lesson in refinement and restraint. A quirky, line-drawn decal from Mockingbird Studios features on the door of the bedroom, serving as a subtle hint to the offbeat interior. Metallic mesh nightstands flank the bed, conjuring quiet vintage charm. “The room is outfitted with contemporary lights, concealed wardrobes and beautiful sheer curtains,” says Rawat.

Parents’ Bedroom

Cerulean waters and pristine white sands are reimagined in the parents’ bedroom, through the wall and furniture palette. The room is visually elongated by mirror-finished wardrobes that conjure a sense of luminous volume. “Keeping the parents’ age in mind, we were intentional about keeping the palette young and fresh,” explains Rawat.
