This week’s edition of House Calls takes us to Germantown, New York, where first-time homebuyers Andrew Gardner and Alex Batkin carefully renovated their circa-1860 Victorian home.
The renovation project, which included restoring the home back to its original character, transformed the structure into a “calm and minimalist” space. Both the exterior and interior are clad in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White, while the couple’s collection of eclectic furnishings offset the home’s original elements, such as the pine plank flooring.
Taking inspiration from the welcoming home, we sourced key products—or some cases, similar finds—from a few standout rooms so you can bring the look to your own space.
Living room
The living room is home to a vintage Hans Wegner sofa with original upholstery, purchased at Finch in Hudson, New York. The marble coffee table was a Craigslist find, and the blue lounger and cream ottoman were from Hammertown’s annual sale. The loveseat is also vintage Hans Wegner with original upholstery, and the light fixture above was originally in Gardner’s parents’ home. The stove is from Vermont Castings, and the Persian Kilim rug was found at an antiques bar in Rhinebeck, New York.
Kitchen
The kitchen is located in an addition that was put onto the home in 1930. The cabinets are painted in Benjamin Moore Simply White and are outfitted with Schoolhouse pulls. The countertops are soapstone from PMI International Stone Importers, light fixtures are from Hip Haven, and the sink faucet is Perrin & Rowe. To the left of the stove, a Schoolhouse Isaac Long Arm sconce lights books and a La Chamba clay pot made in Colombia. A blue Raawi Strom pitcher is home to flowers on the dining table.
Bedroom
Flooring throughout is pine original to the house, refinished with Bona naturale matte. The bed is home to Brooklinen textiles and a blanket from MoMA. The light fixture is a Sazerac Stiches Drew chandelier, and the sconces are custom from Sazerac Stiches. A painting on paper by the Icelandic artist Guðmundur Thoroddsen titled Museum Vandals (2016) hangs over the bed. In one corner is a beloved antique Cherner chair, and in the other is a mirror from West Elm.
