Leanne Ford’s New Collection for Crate and Barrel Will Convert You to Minimalism – Architectural Digest

If there’s anything we have learned from Marie Kondo mania or Kim and Kanye’s Calabasas home, it’s that minimalism is not just a design style, it’s a state of mind. There is a certain humble spirituality associated with spare and uncluttered interiors; the perfect antidote to the overstimulating world outside. But like most things that appear effortless, simplifying at home is not as easy as it sounds. So when we learned that minimalist superstar Leanne Ford was launching her first furniture collection, we had to get her take on mastering the look without appearing, well, boring. Working with a curated palette of black, white, and other neutrals, the Pittsburgh-based designer and star of HGTV’s Restored by the Fords crafts rich interiors using standout silhouettes, natural textures, and layered styling.

“We played with the classic materials that Crate and Barrel does so well and that I’ve always been drawn to,” says Leanne. “We evolved them into clean but natural modern shapes [by] mixing wabi-sabi imperfections with Italian shapes and mid-century simplicity.” Ever Sectional Sofa, $5,197, Mast Leather Seat Director’s Chair, $499, Willy Plaster Pedestal Side Table, $349, printed pillows, $79.95, Ghost Ranch Flatweave rug, $1,299, and Georgia Ombre Jute Rug, $399, available 2/20 at .

That signature look comes to life in the 109-piece furniture collection that she worked on with Sebastian Brauer, Crate and Barrel’s vice president of design. Leanne wanted crisp, laid-back yet elegant designs that she’d searched far and wide for throughout her career without success. That includes a three-legged table named after her three-legged dog, Tom (her companion for the last 17 years). “Everyone I love has secret odes in the furniture names,” Leanne says.

The collection ranges from a bed and bedding to seating of all shapes and sizes to bud vases that can double as candle stick holders, plus objects, textiles, and art. “Leanne is helping redefine American interior style with her artful, design-forward, and relaxed vibe,” says Sebastian. So how does Leanne keep a neutral palette visually interesting and dynamic in her projects? “Layering rugs, layering bedding, playing with shades of whites as well as experimenting with different wood styles and stains,” she explains. “I also always add some black to ground things.”

Mixing materials is also key to a good minimalist design scheme, and Leanne’s collection offers them all, from flax Belgian linen and crisp organic cotton to cane, plaster, leather, and European oak. (Leanne also uses natural woven fibers like rattan for her lighting collection for Target’s Project 62 brand.) Standout furniture pieces include a raw wood dining room table, plaster side table, white linen slipcovered sectional, and arched canopy bed. Hand-thrown pottery from Portugal and hand-knotted sisal, jute, and wool Kilim rugs from India in a palette of muted charcoal grays and maroon round out the offerings. “The collection evolved into clean but natural modern shapes, mixing wabi-sabi imperfections with Italian shapes and mid-century simplicity,” says Leanne.

Besides being a palette cleanser from today’s bold trends, the minimal designs can be seamlessly integrated with other furniture and decor to harmoniously coexist. “I want pieces to live in any style home with other favorite pieces,” she says. “When the color is simple and consistent, then you can play with styles, eras, and textures.” Shop the collection beginning Thursday, February 20th on crateandbarrel.com and in select stores on February 25th.
