If you thought the many, many fridges were the most intriguing part of Kim Kardashian’s house, think again.

The reality star and businesswoman has opened the doors to her minimalist Hidden Hills mansion, after years of sneak peeks over Instagram and photoshoots, and the reality did not disappoint.

With everything from a $600,000 couch to an all-pink bedroom, the home is what husband Kanye West called a “case study”.

In a glamorous spread in design bible Architectural Digest, Kardashian and West open up about how they changed a sprawling extravagant Los Angeles mansion into what the magazine calls a “futuristic Belgian monastery”.

Having first spotted the home in 2013 while walking with baby daughter North, the couple renovated the space with esteemed Belgian architect and designer Axel Vervoordt, who was chosen by the pair after Kanye found inspiration in one of his Floating Stone tables – a low and sensuous design in solid a cream colour.

“When I saw the kind of work he was doing, I thought, this man could design Batman’s house. I had to work with him,” Kanye told the magazine. “It was a coup to get Axel to come to Calabasas to redo a McMansion, which is essentially what the house was.”

Almost every room is covered in a soft white plaster, from the walls to the staircase, with furnishings keeping to the muted neutral colour palette. Gentle arches and high ceilings, with sharply cut windows dotted along hallways, add to the monastery feel of the house.

Soft and modern furniture is dotted throughout, with the pair have collected a number of artworks by renowned names like Anish Kapoor.

The bathroom is particularly zen, with a window bigger than Dermot Bannon’s dreams that faces onto a lush, densely manicured green garden. The pair both said the room was one of their favourites, and features a large gray cement bathtub and full ceiling lighting panel, inspired by the one in Chanel boutiques.

The bathroom renovation was so extensive – after Kim’s mother, Kris Jenner, suggested they expand the space – that it added eight months to the overall build time of the home.

Out back, two lavish swimming pools were uprooted by Kanye, who had a vision of one long statement pool, featuring dramatic steps that creep into the water.

It’s not all Scandi neutrals, though. In contrast, North’s room is a study in pink, with the miniature double bed topped with a large butterfly motif headboard, pink vanity table and two mix-matched mirrors on either side.

All those natural materials and open spaces might not seem child-friendly, but the couple asserted that the space was built with their children in mind. To be fair, the sprawling Isabel Rower sculpture certainly looks like the best playground a child could ask for…

“In the end, we don’t take it too seriously. We’re not going to be fanatics,” Kim said.
