Has anyone else been in denial that coat season has arrived? The yo-yoing temperatures have hardly helped (sandals one day, knee-high boots the next), but there’s no doubt we’re now in the throes of fall. Both my mind and my inbox say it’s time to get my fall coat game into gear—stat. To get started, this week I headed to some of my favorite retailers—Zara, H&M, and Bloomingdales—to seek out some chic coats to get me through the crisp season and into winter.
Fall lends itself beautifully to sumptuous beige, brown, and neutral hues, but I’m also gravitating to trending pops of color (a fuchsia pink Zara overcoat undeniably stopped me in my tracks). I tried on 21 coats, but these 11 made the final cut. From this season’s trending quilted jackets to capes and trenches, scroll below to get you inspired for jacket and coat season ahead.
H&M
Yes, this plush little jacket is as cozy as it looks! I can imagine snuggling up in it on crisp morning weekend walks with hot cocoa in hand. It’s not too heavy (perfect for throwing on over jeans and a tee) but warm enough to take you into the colder winter season. It has a touch of this season’s trending ’70s vibe, which I love.

I was floored at how incredibly luxurious this super-soft suede trench coat felt. While it’s definitely on the more lightweight side (too thin for freezing winter temps), it’s absolutely perfect for the pleasant fall season. And the hue is gorgeous—a rich khaki brown that will go with everything in your closet.

A cute puffer has been high up on my wish list for the new season (quilted, duvet, and puffer coats are a huge trend for fall/winter 2019). I’ve been searching for one that’s not too heavy and has something a little unique. This one fits the bill perfectly. The light pink and dark blue color blocking feels fresh and modern; moreover, it’s short and lightweight—perfect for casual fall weekends. FYI, H&M has a splendid selection of puffers (this burnt orange one also caught my eye).

H&M Padded Jacket ($50)
This sumptuous dark chocolate brown wool trench is perfect for colder temps—made of thick wool, it feels and looks expensive. A chic option for work and as we head into winter. It does run a little large so definitely order a size down.

Zara
Words cannot describe my adoration of this trending cape! It is by far one of my favorite fashion-forward purchases of the season. Not only does it exude major Celine vibes, but it looks super sophisticated and grand; it will unquestionably add a touch of drama to every fall outfit. It also comes in a wearable, chic beige hue.

Zara Long Cape with Pockets ($149)
If you’re going to buy a moto biker jacket this season, make it this insanely gorgeous-feeling fur-lined one. I love that the plush faux fur comes in an unexpected charcoal gray hue, making it perfect to take you into the night in style. I will be living in this once the temps drop below 50!

My iPhone photo does not do the color of this coat justice. The fuchsia pink is simply striking, and while I don’t tend to wear too many colorful coats, I was immediately drawn to its elegance and wow factor. Fashion girls everywhere have been spotted in pink this season, and this loose and languid coat is surprisingly easy to wear and pairs beautifully with neutrals, blues, and grays. Its pared-back, minimalist silhouette adds to its sophistication. It has a cool, slightly oversize fit as well.

Hankering for a little houndstooth? The trendy print is easy to wear yet makes a bold statement. Throw it on over even the simplest of outfits for a chic statement look. This one has a nice weight to it (it will unquestionably keep you toasty) and a slightly boxy, oversize fit.

If you’re in search for a longer-length fall coat, this creamy hued beauty is the one for you. It drapes beautifully, is striking in its simplicity, and looks super posh. It’s actually my favorite of the lot.
