Howard Hughes Corporation Proposes Waterfront Restaurant in Manhattan’s South Street Seaport District – New York YIMBY

Howard Hughes Corporation could soon begin construction on a new waterfront restaurant and bar in the South Street Seaport District pending approval by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Known as Blockhouse Bar, the property is located along the East River Esplanade at 84 John Street, immediately beneath FDR Drive.

The design employs a mix of natural and industrial-looking materials in order to blend in with the context of the surrounding urban waterfront’s red brick architecture and wooden piers. Renderings from Woods Bagot, the architect of record, reveal a minimalist design constructed from a mix of composite wood materials, dark metal light fixtures, steel railings, concrete planters, and illuminated signage. A transparent shell system would be deployed during the cooler months.

The building materials were also chosen to help reduce existing sightlines from John Street and the esplanade of the East River waterfront.

When in operation, the bar’s capacity will max out at 100 patrons. Menu items will include a mix of beer and cocktails, pizza, and a raw bar. The estimated cost of construction is approximately $650,000.
