In 2019, over 176 million people went to the cinema to watch newly released movies and Netflix subscriptions grew to 11.8 million in the UK, so it’s fair to say that we’re a nation of film and series bingers.
But, out of some of the highest-grossing films, which do we like enough to use as inspiration to design real-life living spaces? Arlo & Jacob asked people in the UK which film interiors they’d like to bring to life, and then designed living rooms based on the top 5 results.

Interestingly, James Bond topped the list, with Harry Potter, Star Wars, Titanic and Alice in Wonderland making up the top 5 overall. The Lion King, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Avengers and Jurassic Park also made up the rest of the top 10. Of a seed-list of 22 of the highest-grossing films, Aquaman, Transformers and Minions sat at the bottom as the least “inspo”-worthy for designing living spaces.
When it came to regional differences, the research found that James Bond was the top choice for most, including East Midlands, South West, North West, East of England, Scotland and Wales. Also, where the North East favoured Star Wars, the South East preferred Harry Potter. However, the West Midlands couldn’t decide between these two major franchises, with both tying for first. Yorkshire and Northern Ireland went most against the grain, with Pirates of the Caribbean and Frozen featuring as their top choices respectively.

1. James Bond
Brimming with sophistication and starkness, a 007-themed living space took the top spot of all 22 movie suggestions in the survey. As well as being the most popular choice overall, a stylish space overlooking the iconic London skyline (Arlo & Jacob also matched the space with a crisp white tuxedo and a shaken -not stirred- martini) meant that the Bond-theme was also the most popular choice for men aged over 35.
2. Harry Potter
Despite its story now being over 20 years old, the magic of the Harry Potter franchise and film series still lives on in the hearts of millions of fans around the world, which helped it to place in second spot overall. A Hogwarts-themed décor was also the number one choice for women and for the 25-34 age group and has been depicted by Arlo & Jacob as a cosy, yet gothic, living room, with a roaring fire, Gryffindor colours, and strong period features.
3. Star Wars
As a major franchise which boasts an impressive 9 films in the saga so far (plus 3 stand-alone films), it’s no surprise that Star Wars features in the top 5. With a huge cult following, the iconic classic came in third place overall, and was the second most popular choice for men overall, being particularly popular with men aged 35-44. Arlo & Jacob created a futuristic design (featuring duo lightsabres) which would offer a minimalist living space for those looking to use ‘the Force’.
4. Titanic
As the only film in the top 5 that stands alone (with no prequel or sequel) and is based on real events, Titanic was the fourth most popular overall, and the second most popular choice for women. From the ornate staircase to the crystal chandelier, opulence and splendour are the key themes of this elegant and refined living room space designed by Arlo & Jacob.
5. Alice In Wonderland
Based on the classic 1865 children’s book, it’s not surprising that Alice in Wonderland made it to number five in the most highly requested movie-inspired living rooms. From the unique and colourful jumble of crockery, to the chaotic chequered floor, Arlo & Jacob’s Wonderland-inspired living room could be the perfect place to host a very special tea party or two.
