8 Niche Styling Tricks I’m Going to Try In 2020 – Yahoo Style

Going back to work after the Christmas holidays is full of mixed feelings. You’ve been wearing nothing but loungewear and themed pyjamas for over a week, yet the new year (decade!) sparks a sartorial motivation to try new trends and outfits. Conflicting much? I couldn’t agree more. Which is why, for the better part of December, I’ve been collecting styling tips I spot on Instagram in anticipation of the commencement of 2020. And here we are.

This is because, if you’re anything like me, you’ve spent most of your money on gifts, self-gifts, party outfits, eco-friendly wrapping paper, champagne and Fortnum and Mason chocolate creams (self gift)….which leaves little funds for new wardrobe-y bits.

December has that way of convincing you it’s alright to be a lot less sensible and throw caution to the wind. Meanwhile, as we peel off our glittery tights in January, we don’t have much financial wiggle room for fashion cravings.

But that’s what we’re here for. Since necessity is the mother of all invention, here are eight niche styling tricks I’ve found for you to try with pieces you likely already have.

If, like me, you grow tired of wearing jumpers-as-tops for four straight months, shake it up by adding a statement top (a ruffled collar is essential) underneath. Honestly, it raises the game of literally any jumper in a way no roll neck could do.

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENTS

Ganni Ruffled-Collar Cotton-Poplin Shirt (£120)

Arket Cropped Leather Trousers (£250)

So you bought a couple of glittery garms for your Christmas dinners and dos and you’re not sure what to do with them now? Transform your party pieces into chic daytime looks by layering a puff-sleeve top underneath and pairing with chunky boots.

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENTS

Ganni Twist-Neck Cotton-Poplin Blouse (£140)

Zara Pleated Polka Dot Dress (£30)

Arket Chunky-Sole Leather Boots (£175)

Not the newest trick in the book, but one that keeps popping back up, pair a big silk or velvet bow with a simple, minimalist outfit. You can invest in a designer piece, but you can also easily find loads of them on Etsy.

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENT

Erdem Faux Pearl-Embellished Bow Hair Clip (£195)

If the ease of popping on a jumpsuit in the warmer months feels complicated by adding a jumper on top (button mayhem), consider layering a think knit underneath instead and style with classic trainers. Very Phoebe Philo, no?

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENTS

Arched Eyebrow for Navabi Checked Jumpsuit (£131)

Arket Cashmere Roll-Neck Jumper (£135)

The genius who started this look again in 2019 deserves a prize because essentially this styling trick allows you to carry that extra, just-in-case layer (hot on the tube, cold at the office) around in the chicest possible way. Brilliant!

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENT

Arket Oversized Cardigan (£89)

Previously deemed uncool, the white sock-and-shoe combo has made a firm comeback and works to add a little air of mystery to any outfit and has become a favourite among minimalist and maximalist style stars alike.

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENT

Weekday Eleven Socks (£4)

Layering a slip dress is not a novel styling trick, but layering with a button-down top is, especially if you opt for a colour scheme. We love Reese’s green look, with matching bag, but more minimalist options could be shades of browns or creams.

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENTS

& Other Stories Relaxed Fit Button Up (£45)

& Other Stories Side Slit Midi Slip Dress (£75)

Proenza Schouler Textured-Leather Brogues (£690)

This might my favourite trick of all because we don’t have to leave out pyjamas behind! I feel as though pyjama tops have had their turn in the “underwear-as-outwear” spotlight and now it’s time for the bottoms. Silk trousers are so incredibly chic, and you probably already have a pair if you of a silk PJ set. Pair with a black blazer, white tee, and gold chain et voilà!

KEY OUTFIT INGREDIENTS

Arket Oversized Wool Hopsack Blazer (£135)

Asceno + NET SUSTAIN London Printed Washed-Silk Pajama Pants (£210)
