City-based young architects — Gursimran Kaur and Harkaran Singh Boparai —have won the prestigious National Architecture and Interior Design Award, 2019, for the most promising company in residential architecture. The brother-sister duo, who run their own firm, Space 5 Architects, are the first from the city to have won the prestigious award. Both got the award for a residential project they worked at under the budgeted category. “We got the award for a home we designed and constructed under a span of seven months, strictly working on budget. The house has minimalist design and modern aesthetics,” informed Harkaran, 24, a product of GNDU’s Guru Ram Dass School of Architecture.

Gursimran, 26, and Harkaran began their company two years back, with an aim to design sustainable future homes. “Sustainability is the biggest factor we take into account while working on a project. My sister is more into classical, traditional designs, while I try to work in modern aesthetics,” says Harkaran.

Believing in the idea of modern mix of aesthetics and eco-friendly principles while designing a house, he says that they want to take their company forward as a leading name in sustainable architecture. “We want to standardise architecture, with cost effectiveness and sustainability as main principles. Most people think that a modern home cannot be complete without a specific ‘labels’ and ‘price tags’. We want to change that perception,” he added.
